Been meaning to post this for a while!

On April 22nd I was invited to photograph one of the many catwalk shows taking place in Cabot Circus, Bristol. It was a great little opportunity to get a feel for photographing fashion shows (after I missed out on Bristol Fashion Week!). I got to stand at the end of the catwalk in the photographer pit and see everything front on from the best vantage point, and it was actually a really fun show to watch. I forget what brand it was, but I especially liked the female models wearing vibrant symmetrical patterns and carrying brightly coloured washing baskets, as well as the pastel colours and star balloons shown by New Look.

The woman organising everything said to send our best photos to her to put on their social media sites, where they would be voted on and the owner of the best of the best would win some money or something. So I sent her my pick and…heard nothing. No acknowledgement I’d even sent them. Weird, but nevermind, I was in it for the experience.

Busy Bee

Very busy day yesterday!

I had contacted photographer Andy Hoang, a little while ago, asking whether I could assist him on any future shoots. Sure enough he got back to me about helping out on a shoot he was doing for fashion headwear company FuudHoods.

So we met up in Stokes Croft and then went to the FuudHood studios, where their model was getting made-up and we picked out outfits. Then we walked to the unlikely location of a car park for the photoshoot. Up on the top floor we got a great view of the whole of Bristol, with the sun providing perfect back lighting.

I set up and adjusted lighting, took on the role of stylist, gave direction and also took some of the photos. It was a really great day ^w^

Some iPod snaps of one of the outfits:

The model (who I didn’t catch the name of :c) was really lovely and the hoods are pretty epic.

I don’t drive so I cycle or walk everywhere, and yesterday involved lots of travelling. I ended up going between Hotwells, the City Centre, Stokes Croft, Park Row and Bower Ashton. Which in the sun especially, was quite a work out!

Unfortunately I had to leave the shoot early as I had a slot booked at uni, getting feedback on my essay before the hand in. That went well - I only have a few amendments to do. Still have my dissertation proposal to write this weekend though D:

Finally I came home to a bbq for dinner with my housemates and some uni friends. Very enjoyable :3

Bristol Fashion Week Live Blogging Event

I’m officially a BFW Blogger! :3 (With my own button and all.)

Which means I’ll be blogging live at the event on the 23rd of March, updating you on what’s happening, with photos of the action and my favourite outfits.

Bristol Fashion Week also have their own blog which will be live from 4pm.

I can’t wait ^o^

Bristol Fashion Week

It’s Bristol Fashion week soon!

My friend’s got me into the live blogging event ^o^ and I’m hoping that I’ll be able to help out backstage for some of it.

Should be good.

Work Experience With James Stopforth

I chose to do the work experience module this term to try and get myself out into the field, making contacts and learning the ropes.

I got in contact with and had the chance to go and assistant photographer and set designer James Stopforth in Dorset. As well as working on his own shoots he assists set designer Shona Heath and top fashion photographer Tim Walker.

This is one of his images ‘Cave’.

And here you can see the back of his head as he models for Tim Walker’s ‘Tales of the Unexpected’. ^-^

I was pretty nervous about it all, but by the time I got there they had settled, he was really friendly and I had a really good time.

At the moment he’s working on a shoot about natural disasters, so he’s made things such as a volcano, a whirl pool and storm cloud. I assisted him with 2 shots; one of a tornado (made by painting light as night) taken in a field next to a ripped up tree, and the other of a storm cloud and lightning bolts set up in a tree.

I helped carrying things round, setting up, pressing the shutter release, lighting smoke bombs, and I got to be in charge of the smoke machine (though it seemed to have a mind of it’s own!).

It was a great opportunity to talk to someone who’s already working in the industry and it’s definitely inspired me to pursue working in that area of fashion and fine art.

And when he’s finished all the photos, hopefully I’ll be able to post them here so you can see what I’m talking about!
